FAQ's

I don't have a plane and would like "try" before I buy. What can I do?
Aspiring RC pilots are welcome even if they don't have a plane. If arranged in advanced, a club trainer airplane is available for you to take an introductory flight with an instructor. If you have purchased your plane, we can provide help setting it up and help you make sure it's safe to fly.

How much is this hobby going to cost me?
You can purchase a basic electric RC airplane for under a hundred dollars. These types of models can be flown in almost any sized open space. Electrics can get you in to the hobby without spending a small fortune.

A 3 or 4 channel RTF (Ready to fly) nitro/gas trainer will cost you around $300.00, figure another $100.00 for needed field equipment (fuel, glow plug igniter, etc). You can also purchase ARF's (Almost Ready to Fly) planes. When purchasing an ARF, you may be required to purchase the motor and/or radio separate.

At the top end of RC flying, you can spend as much as you would like. There are only 3 things that determine how much and what type of planes to get.

  • Your imagination
  • Your budget
  • Your wife

The RC Hobby can be whatever you make it. It can be a cheap hobby or expensive hobby. The great thing about North Texas Aeromodelers, you can try the hobby first without spending any money. et with a listed instructor listed on our Membership page and you will given an introductory flight (club provides plane, fuel, radio, etc) before making an investment in the hobby. An instructor will teach you the basics and help you in flying a plane.

Additional costs that you may have is club membership and insurance. When joining a club (North Texas Aeromodelers for example), you must be a member of Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA) which provides you insurance needed to fly. With North Texas Aeromodelers and joining the AMA, your costs are right at $100.00 for a year.

Do I have to join North Texas Aeromodelers? What is the cost?
Yes - 2 weeks pay (paystub needed to verify amount). Just kidding, the real answer - you do not need to join North Texas Aeromodelers, however, club dues and membership do take care of the field. All costs and maintenance are taken care of by the club, not the City.

Does Dallas (club President) really crash all student planes?
No, tracking Dallas's flying with students, only 43% of the planes he assists with will actually crash, not all planes as rumored.

I crashed my plane, will the club give me a new one?
Contact Dwayne (club Secretary) for immediate replacement.

Why are there so many trees around the field?
Tree's were installed by local hobby shops. We're not sure why.

Does the club have a boat in case I need access to the pond?
No, the club does not own or have access to a boat. However, Evan (club Field Manager) is a great swimmer and will be glad to assist when needed.
